North Carolina drivers, it’s time to gear up for significant changes in your auto insurance landscape. Starting July 1, 2025 updates to the North Carolina Safe Driver Incentive Plan (NCSDIP) and minimum insurance coverage laws will reshape how your premiums are calculated and what coverage you must carry.

Whether you’re a seasoned driver or just hitting the road, understanding these changes is crucial.

Understanding the NCSDIP Changes: The Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP) is a system that assigns insurance points based on driving violations and at-fault accidents. Accumulating points can lead to substantial premium increases, sometimes exceeding 200% for severe offenses.

Key Changes Effective July 1, 2025

Major Violations Offenses: such as reckless driving, hit-and-run, or DUI will remain on your record for 5 years, up from the previous 3 years.
Minor Speeding and PJCs: Minor speeding (10 mph or less over the limit) and Prayer for Judgment Continued (PJC) will also have a 5-year lookback period, instead of 3.

These changes mean that violations will impact your insurance rates for a longer period, emphasizing the importance of defensive driving. For a detailed breakdown of violations and their impact, refer to the NC Safe Driving Incentive Program chart. https://www.ncdoi.gov/consumers/auto-and-vehicle-insurance/safe-driver-incentive-plan

Minimum Coverage Increases and UIM Mandate: In a move to enhance driver protection, North Carolina is increasing the minimum required coverage levels as of July 1, 2025. New Minimum Coverage Requirements: Bodily Injury (per person): $50,000 Bodily Injury (per accident): $100,000 Property Damage: $50,000 Additionally, Underinsured Motorist (UIM) coverage becomes mandatory. UIM will now match your policy limits and pay up to the full limit with no offsets if you’re injured by an underinsured driver, offering more financial protection in serious accidents.

Inexperienced Driver Surcharge: For newer drivers, the surcharge period will expand from 3 to 8 years, effective July 1, 2025. The highest surcharges occur during years 1–3, gradually decreasing through year 8. This change means that newly licensed drivers will face extended surcharge periods, making insurance more costly for a longer duration.

What These Changes Mean for You

Higher Premiums: Expect increased premiums, especially if you carry minimum coverage or have any violations. Extended Surcharge Periods: New and young drivers will face longer surcharge periods.

Longer Impact of Violations: Safe driving is more important than ever, as violations now follow you for a longer time.

Improved Protection: While more coverage is required, you also gain better protection.

Tips to Navigate the Changes Review Your Coverage: If you’re at the minimums, prepare for a premium increase.
